Big plantation

This afternoon five of us went over to a big plantation, about a mile and a half from here, in the Nile Valley.  There are several villages there, but we kept well away from them as they are out of bounds. This plantation is composed of big palms, and crops of vegetables and wheat. The palms average from 50 to 75 ft. high and look very fine. We all hired donkeys and rode all over the place. The donkeys are little rats of animals and one’s feet just touch the ground. There are no bridles, reigns, or stirrups, you sit on a sort of saddle and let your dragoman hit your nag along. I bought a few trinkets from a little fellah girl, which I am sending to Mollie.
